Geolocation

Product overview

Geolocation uses location data collected by the Identity Verification modules in your workflow to check whether the client is located in a prohibited country.

How data is collected

Fourthline collects geolocation data during the Document and Biometrics modules, but only if the client has granted location permission before reaching those steps.

If the client has not granted permission before reaching the document or selfie capture step, geolocation data will not be collected for that step, even if permission is granted later.

If the client does not grant location permission at all, the verification returns status code 3500 (Geolocation not provided).

ModuleData collectedRequires location permission?
DocumentIdentity document photo(s) and video geolocationYes and must be granted before this step
BiometricsSelfie photo and video geolocationYes and must be granted before this step

Note

Device geolocation may be collected as part of Digital Proof of Address, but it is optional. Digital Proof of Address does not require location permission and can function independently of geolocation. See the Digital Proof of Address page for details.

Device metadata

Fourthline also collects the following device signals during Identity Verification.

SignalDescription
IP addressThe IP address of the device used during the flow.
Phone country codeThe country code of the client's phone number.
Device languageThe language configured on the client's device.
Device regionThe region configured on the client's device.
Device modelThe model of the client's device.

When Geolocation is enabled, Fourthline compares these signals with the collected location data to identify inconsistencies. The IP address and phone country code are also checked against prohibited countries.

Country requirements

Geolocation is mandatory in the Netherlands. See Identity Verification solutions for country-specific solutions and module requirements.

Verification checks

Fourthline evaluates the collected geolocation data and performs the following checks:

CheckDescription
Self-captureThe client gave permission to share each geolocation data point themselves and the geolocation comes from the device being used, not any other source.
Data validityAll required geolocation data points are present and valid. The identity document video and selfie video geolocations must also be captured within 100 metres of each other.
Prohibited countryNo geolocation data point, IP address, or phone country code is in a prohibited country. Fourthline human agents investigate any data point outside of Europe.
